Let Greenville be your Golfing Destination

Let Greenville be your Golfing Destination
Golfing is huge and it is taking over! Golfing tournaments are getting major play on the weekends and golfing pros are becoming real celebrities in our homes. With this growing interest in golfing, I thought I would take a look and see where Greenville SC lands as a golfing vacation destination.

In order to get some stats, I am using GolfAdvisor’s website for Greenville. Out of 1,619 reviews, Greenville ranks 4 stars out of 5. Interesting tidbit is that Greenville got 4.2 stars out of 5 for average value for the money. That means people believe playing at our courses is a good deal.

They also listed the top rated golf courses with a criteria of 10 minimum reviews to qualify. Here are the top 10 courses.
  • Crosswinds Golf Course (par 3 course). Designers include Tom Fazio Pete Dye, Rees Jones and Arnold Palmer Design.
  • The Walker Golf Course at Clemson University
  • Connestee Falls Golf Course
  • Cherokee Valley Golf Club
  • Village Greens Country Club
  • Fox Run Country Club
  • Willow Creek Golf & Country Club
  • The Preserve at Verdae
  • Saluda Valley Country Club
  • Legacy Pines Golf Club
Looking at GolfAdvisor’s map of golf courses near Greenville, there must be about 50 of them. So your chances of finding a course within your ability and price range are very high. Groupon even has a few deals on golfing games.

Now if it’s public courses you are interested in then Greenville has five of them. The Verdae Greens Golf Club is said to be tournament-quality since it hosts the Greater Greenville Classic each year. With major competition from private clubs the public courses have to stay on top of their game (ha!) just to compete.

So in conclusion, there are many sites where you can look up information about Greenville courses and I would say that Yes! Greenville should be a golfing vacation destination for you. And perhaps if you play a round you can come back and leave us a note about your experience below!

Job Opportunities Make Moving to Greenville a Must!

Job Opportunities Make Moving to Greenville a Must!
Greenville’s economy is growing with more businesses taking up shop in the downtown and surrounding areas. Now named 4th fastest growing city by the U.S. Census Bureau. So why are these people moving to Greenville. Maybe because of these major employers.
  • Greenville Health System, 14,787 health service jobs
  • School District of Greenville County, 9,800 public education jobs
  • Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, 5,047 health service jobs
  • Michelin North America Inc, 4,100 headquarters, R&D & manufacturing jobs
  • GE Power & Water, 3,400 turbines & turbine generator sets
  • SC State Government, 3,036 state government jobs
  • Fluor Corporation, 2,400 engineering & construction services jobs
There are also 18 major international, North American, national and regional corporations that have their headquarters in Greenville. Some of them are AMECO, AVX Corporation, Hubbell Lighting, Kemet Corporation, and Verizon.

Job Opportunities Make Moving to Greenville a Must!Manufacturing also plays a huge role in Greenville’s employer base with companies such as Michelin, GE Energy, Sealed Air Corp, Magna, Lockheed Martin Aircraft and Honeywell.

You will also find several inbound customer service call centers located in Greenville. Several for major corporations like Duke Energy, Ford Motor Company and Samsung.

Not to leave out technology and software development companies, we have many including Acumen IT, Green Cloud Technologies and Hitachi.

Distribution and logistics is also a major factor. Some of the major companies include ABF Freight System Inc, Atlas Cold Storage, KI Logistics, Nissan North America, Pet Dairy, Synnex and WW Grainger. There are over 70 freight lines in the Greenville-Spartanburg area and half of them have terminals. With a convenient location along the I-85 corridor, numerous specialized trucking carriers are based here.

A final tidbit on cost of living. The Cost of Living Index (COLI) has published a rating of 93.7 for 2016 annual average. An index score below 100 shows the community to be less expensive than the average of all cities throughout the U.S. while a score over 100 means it is more expensive than average.

Get Out and Play

In my monthly newsletter, I report that the U.S. Census Bureau has named Greenville SC as the 4th fastest growing city in the U.S. Our local city government has taken notice of the growth and is investing in infrastructure which includes city parks and recreational areas. Millennials have started moving back to the cities across the U.S. but are looking for trendy urban areas where they can eat, shop and work within walking or quick transit distance of their home.  This also includes recreation. So I thought I would take a look at the parks we have and give you some highlights and then go over future park projects.

get out and play
Falls Park on the Reedy
Falls Park on the Reedy. Our best example of an urban park is Falls Park. This park starts in downtown Greenville and has trails which lead to a revitalized Main St. This park is setup to be an oasis within the city much like Central Park in New York City. It has a multi-use facility, walking and biking trails and a fantastic and unique bridge for pedestrian traffic.

Legacy Park. This 20-acre park was actually inspired by Central Park in NYC. Legacy Park has open spaces, water features, landscaping, playgrounds and paved paths for walking, jogging or biking. It has a pavilion that can be rented and picnic tables for day use.

Cleveland Park. Named for the family who donated the 122 acres of land to create the park, Cleveland Park has a fitness trail, picnic shelters, playgrounds, softball field, tennis and volleyball courts. Cleveland Park is also the site for Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Rock Quarry Garden, Fernwood Nature Trail and the Greenville Zoo.

Looking at google maps there are six major parks located in and around downtown Greenville. The goal of our city’s Parks and Recreation department is to make sure that Greenville’s parks remain optimal for public use. There is 39 city parks and more than 400 acres of land just within the city. With that much land available how can you not be inspired to “Go Play.”

As the population of Greenville continues to grow and urban buildings like apartments, shops and restaurants are built it will be most important to have areas within a short distance where you can go relax and get away from your stress for a bit.

Concept for new Greenville park
The latest in park development is the movement of the Greenville Public Works Department to the over side of town so a new major 65-acre park can be built to connect with the Swamp Rabbit Trail. This endeavour will be larger than Falls Park and encompass the existing Mayberry Park. Although still in the planning stages, it looks to be another boon for the residents of Greenville SC.
