Spruce up your yard with these 4 spring landscaping tips

Spruce up your yard with these 4 spring landscaping tips
Pop in a tree.
We don’t all have a green thumb and are successful a growing things. But here are some tips that will help you spruce up your yard as well as add some interest. No need to be a master gardener here.
  • Pop in a tree. Easy to dig a hole and pop one in. Once the tree is established it is virtually maintenance free. Talk with a nursery to see what would be good in your yard but give your yard some pizzazz.
  • Mulch it! Easy way to add a pop of color and some great texture to a bland yard. You can find it in red, black, gold, cedar-toned and pine straw. Get unique by using pine cones. Mulch is easy, designer and you don’t have to plant it.
  • Edge it! Do you have some walkways that just seem to disappear into the yard? Define them with some edging. Another thing you don’t have to plant. Most home improvement stores carry a multitude of different kinds of edging from blocks to black plastic. Pick something interesting. However, if you do want to edge with plants pick vinca, lily of the valley, lamb’s ears or pachysandra. They will add color and/or textures.
  • Create a personal focal point.

    Create a personal focal point.
Make your yard an extension of you or your personality. Use some old character pieces to create unique tables or settings for potted plants. Oversized flower pots can be used as tables, fishnets or crab traps can be used to hold interesting items and can be topics for discussion. Make your yard multi-dimensional.
Spruce up your yard with these 4 spring landscaping tipsThese are some great tips. I was recently checking out the Lowe’s website and came across their Ideas & How Tos section. Inside this tab you will find lots of ideas that are both green and non-green and easy. Lots of projects can be completed in a weekend. With Memorial Day weekend coming now is the time to do something to up your curb appeal. I even found guides for gardening and planting in different regions of the U.S.

Do you make these spring cleaning mistakes? Part Two

Do you make these spring cleaning mistakes? Part Two
Last week we explored four mistakes people make when spring cleaning their home. Here are four more mistakes I found that might be very helpful to you.
  1. Mistake: relying on harsh cleaners. Don’t turn your home into a toxic dump. Just because you are used to reaching for the bleach when you see mold doesn’t mean it is the only thing that works on it. Try a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. It cleans most surfaces with the chemicals and leaves them germ free also.
  2. Mistake: using chemical air fresheners. Got a sudden smell and you reach for the aerosol air freshener but wait, these contain indoor pollutants like phthalates, which can affect your hormone levels, increase asthma and allergies and cause reproductive abnormalities. Try a homemade solution instead like potpourri or essential oils and water in a spray bottle.
  3. Mistake: leaving the clutter. We talked about cleaning with a plan in mind part of that plan is to put away or throw away all the clutter in the room. Clutter gathers dust, dust mites and other yucky stuff so get it taken care of before you start the full session.
  4. Mistake: treating it like a chore. Put a positive spin on your spring cleaning by turning it into an exercise “literally.” A study done by Harvard shows that if you treat cleaning like a beneficial exercise the results were a decrease in weight, BMI, blood pressure plus more. What a gain! Clean home, allergy-free air and looking good! You can also get the kids involved by treating it as a game or competition. Prizes can be a trip to the pool!
Hope these tips have help you do some great cleaning. If you have any great cleaning tips, let me know below.

Do you make these spring cleaning mistakes?

Do you make these spring cleaning mistakes?
Spring has sprung and now you want to throw open all your windows on the house and let in the cool clean air. But wait...is it really that clean. If you are or have an allergy sufferer in your home, opening all those windows could be a mistake. The wind will blow the pollen in and allow it to settle in your home. If you have to open the windows then just don’t do it in the morning when the pollen count is much higher. Now that we have that mistake out of the way here are some more.
  1. Mistake: not looking up when you start cleaning. Yep we all do it. You have cleaned the whole room then realized you need to do the ceiling fan. But wait...now dust will get all over your clean room. Before you start cleaning up any room lookup, check your fan if you have one, check tops of bookshelves, crown molding and even window ledges. Any and all of the flat surfaces that exist above your head.
  2. Mistake: start cleaning without a plan. Ok, so you are up and cleaning, and cleaning and suddenly its late and your house is a mess. Professionals suggest breaking up the spring cleaning job into more manageable goals. Start with the hardest room first and get it out of the way. Then you will feel like you have accomplished something big!
  3. Mistake: ignoring the attachments or your vacuum. Your carpet isn’t the only thing that needs the vacuum. Make use of your attachments and get between your refrigerator and the wall. Don’t forget to clean the drip pan. Also remember the baseboards around the room. They have ledges also, they maybe small but they are there and grab dirt like crazy.
  4. Mistake: forgetting the mattress. You spend up to 8 hours a day in your bed so it is no wonder it can get gross! Just think of all those happy dust mites...ewww. So buy or rent a vapor steam cleaner and get it cleaned. Once it is cleaned cover it with an anti-allergen mattress protector.
Hope these tips have helped you do some great cleaning. I will have four more mistakes for you next time so tune in to see what else you may be missing.
