Single or Double? That is the question.

single or double? that is the question
Our sinks can be a focal point of our kitchen. Sometimes it is a great thing and other times it is a disaster. If you need a bit of change but don’t want to redo your kitchen, try a sink upgrade. Here are some pros and cons for single or double.
  • Multitasking. It is very hard to do in a single sink especially when washing dishes since you have to wash and rinse in the same space. With a double sink you can do both using one side to wash and the other to rinse or even to clean veggies needed for dinner.
  • Larger than usual. However, one big single sink is more than enough to handle oversized and larger than normal pots, pans etc.
  • Drain board. In a single sink, trying to use a drainboard would be a bit awkward but a double sink can accommodate just fine.
  • Flexibility. In a single sink you can use a plastic tub to work as a second sink if needed. In a double sink, the divider would take up valuable space that you might need for other things.
  • single or double? that is the questionGarbage disposal. In a single sink you won’t be able to access it if you are washing dishes for the sink is full. In a double sink, if one side is full the other side with the disposal could be open. Some homes with kitchen islands will put the garbage disposal in a small sink placed in the island which would leave your main sink free.
  • Other Options: If you can’t decide between the two here are a couple of options that might work. A single sink with a low-profile divider that will fit larger pots and pans but still have a slight division. Or you can use removable bins, strainer/colander inserts and sliding cutting boards.
Before you buy do some homework into the options, pricing and installation of both styles. One version might fit better into your budget or accommodate your kitchen accessories better than the other.

Spring has sprung and the grass is rising

Spring has sprung and the grass is rising
It’s March and time to start getting your yard in shape for a great growing season ahead. Here are five tips to help you out.
  • Check the Mess. As soon as you can get outside take a walk around your yard and assess what winter has done. Check for down limbs, check out your shrubs and bushes and garden structures. Do a general walk around to see if there is any damage that needs to be fixed.
  • Wake it up with a rake. Your yard likes to go dormant for the winter. Wake it up by grabbing a rake and give it an overall vigorous raking. Especially if you have pine trees. Work on areas where the thatch is heaviest.
  • Weeds. Got crabgrass? Control it with pre emergent crabgrass control but it needs to go down when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees and the crabgrass begins to grow. Using a pre emergent may take several years before you see any results.
  • Trim it up. As your yard defrosts move upward to the shrubs and then the trees. Trim out dead or unhealthy looking growth. For flowering bushes, don’t trim until after they bloom.
  • Check out the irrigation. Now is the time to test run your sprinkler system and replace any heads that aren’t functioning properly. Fix or replace broken patio furniture. Re-coat your deck. Tune up your lawn mower and trimmer. Clean and sharpen shears.
It will take more than just one weekend to get your yard back in shape but doing the pre-season activities will give you a step up on the Jones’.

Boost Your Mood with Indoor Houseplants

Boost Your Mood with Indoor Houseplants
Although the Groundhog said it would be an early spring this year, you may still be socked inside with snow and cold weather. Well did you know that a few strategic houseplants can lessen your depression and lighten your mood? Often wonder why mom always brings a houseplant or flower when you're sick? Here are some tips on what to buy and how they help.
  • The power of green. Houseplants will improve your outlook on life. Research shows that plants affect you by reducing stress, physical discomfort and pain tolerance without really knowing why. This phenomenon is called biophilia (a love for nature). Architects have designed buildings to incorporate green spaces into them just for this reason.
  • Natural air freshener. Closed up spaces mean stale air but adding plants increases your fresh oxygen intake. Plants will even filter out harmful indoor pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde and ammonia. These pollutants off-gas from items like furniture, flooring and cleansers. For air cleaning try these plants: Boston fern, English ivy, spider plant, bamboo palm, weeping fig, flamingo lily, peace lily or cornstalk dracaena.
  • Lift your spirits. Try to find a flowering plant or a plant that will put something back into the air. Possible plants are Anthuriums (bloom year round), ferns, Chinese evergreen, golden pothos, mother-in-law’s tongue or snake plant (drought resistant).
You will be surprised how adding a little bit of living green in your home will help to chase out those winter blues. Just even talking to a houseplant can brighten your day. For every molecule of carbon dioxide you sent it’s way you will be one of fresh filtered oxygen back. So go buy a plant!
